Vitosha

Vitosha Mountain is located in the western part of Bulgaria. It is only 10 km to the South of Sofia, the capital of the country. Vitosha is known to be the highest ski resort in Bulgaria, though not the most modern one. Vitosha hotels and chalets offer basic facilities at low prices. That is why the hotels in Dragalevtsi and Simeonovo quarters of Sofia are recommended to people with higher requirements.

The highest peak of Vitosha is Cherni Vrah – Black Peak (2290 m). The main skiing area is under it. Vitosha offers walls for rock climbing in its eastern part, too.

Vitosha Mountain is famous for its unique natural phenomena – the stone rivers, called Moreni (moraines). They are piles of huge rounded granite stones on many of the river valleys reaching up to 2 km in length and 150 m in width. The mostly visited of these Moreni (moraines) are the ones situated in Zlatnite Mostove (The Golden Bridges) locality.

In Vitosha there are two biosphere reserves – Bistrishko Branishte and Torfeno Branishte.

Vitosha Mountain is also popular for its cave Duhlata – the longest cave in Bulgaria. It is 17.5 km long; spreads on 7 levels and six underground rivers pass through it.

Its vicinity to Sofia makes it possible to get involved in the dynamic atmosphere of the capital, to plunge into its history of thousands of years, to feel the pulse of its night life of a big city.
