Berkovitsa

Berkovitsa is a town in the northern foot of Berkovski Balkan (Western Balkan Range). It is 89 kilometers north from Sofia and 25 kilometers north from the Petrohan pass. The region of Berkovitsa is characterized with hilly mountainous terrain, which is often cut through by deep ravines. The highest point in Berkovitsa municipality is the top of Kom – 2016 meters above sea level.

The history of Berkovitsa can be traced back to the middle ages and the rule of King Kaloyan. A lot of remains of fortresses and an ancient church from the 4th century AD are a proof of that fact. The town was first mentioned in a written document from 1491. In the years of Ottoman invasion Berkovitsa became known for its woodworkers and pottery craftsmen.

Nowadays the town is easily reached by bus and train. There is regular transport to and from Sofia, Montana, Lom, Varshets and many others small towns in the region.
